Gums that bleed during brushing and flossing and swollen gums are the most common complaints of pregnant women, this is a result of an increase in progesterone level. Gums tend to react with bacteria in plaque more by increasing the supply of blood that causes inflammation.

Unfortunately, gum disease can affect pregnancy and with poor oral hygiene gingivitis being the mildest for of gum disease may progress to advance periodontal disease. With advance gum diseases, infection already goes beyond the gums to the tissues and bones resulting to damage and eventually tooth loss. Serious cases of gum disease with pregnant women can result to premature labor. Thus, superior oral hygiene and gum disease treatment is necessary for pregnant women. And it is necessary also to see the dentist for proper treatments and for safe and effective oral health care products. Commercial oral health care products uses chemicals as active ingredients and may be dangerous to both the mother and the child. Swollen gums and other forms of gum disease should not hinder the feeling of joyfulness during pregnancy, they can be prevented and treated.
